Surround Video - What is it?
A conventional camera with a standard or wide-angle lens produces a picture with 40 to 60 degrees of viewing angle. This covers less than half of the room. The advantage of this method is that you can use practically any camera and select the best side of the room. |

A wide angle panoramic camera will
cover 100 to 360 degrees, depending on the type of camera
and lens (examples
here). Rotational panoramic cameras can be programmed
to turn around several times to produce photographs
covering more than 360 degrees. This can be useful for
taking scenes that change during the exposure.
Unfortunately, viewing even a complete 360 degree
panoramic scene as a flat-image doesn't give the viewer
the right look and feel. |

Enter Surround Video. This exciting
technology, developed by Black Diamond Consulting jointly
with Microsoft, performs optical correction of the
flat-image file, effectively simulating a cylindrical
surface, which results in a much more realistic
perspective. This technology can be applied both to
panoramic photographs and 3D generated images. |
